Types of Thread Protectors for Oil Industry

Demand for oilfield equipment has been at an all time high since the global demand for the oil has increased. The rise in the world population is also putting pressure on these non renewable resources to meet the growing needs of the population. The surge in the demand for oil and natural gas has also witnessed a steep rise in the prices of not just the end products but also the components that are used in the making of these products. Due to this increase in price, the investment in the field of exploration has also seen an unprecedented growth.

In the oilfield equipment, thread protectors play a very crucial role. They are supposed to protect the pipes during the process of exploration and transportation. The main job of the protectors is to protect the threaded region from any damage while the pipes are being loaded, unloaded, stored or transported. The threaded parts of the pipe need to be sheltered from any damage such as corrosion, crash or contact with impurities. There are two types of materials used for the making of these pipes – steel threads and plastic threads.

In order to protect the threaded portion of the pipes that are used in the oilfield equipments, the protective coverings can be applied either manually or by using machines. The main reason why many thread protectors suppliers suggest using the metal protectors is because of their ability to be reused after cleaning. However, the plastic thread protectors first need to be collected and then recycled so that they can be reused.

During oil exploration, one can use plastic protectors that are capable of withstanding rough ambient and handling conditions which are caused during the transportation process. This protects the threads from any corrosion or physical impact. Plastic protectors are lightweight which brings down the cost of transportation significantly and makes them more economical. Since they can also be recycled and used again, their overall effectiveness in the long run increases exponentially.

However, the metal protectors are still the more preferred choice for many buyers because they are designed in such a way that they cover the entire threaded portion of the pipe, thereby sealing internal and external threads. This eliminates any possibilities of contact with the contaminants or moisture. They are able to perform exceptionally well, even in the harshest weather conditions. They can also be reused by simply cleaning which is a less tedious process than the plastic collectors.

Another type of protector that is used in the oilfield equipment is the composite thread protector. These protectors are capable of providing the combined strengths of steel and plastic protectors, that is, corrosion resistance of plastic and impact resistance of steel. They are also designed to cover the pipe threads in entirety which offers security against damages from impact.

There is also another variant called the tubular handling systems that are used while transportation of process of oil exploration. Due to their high density packing, they are more suited for storage and transportation.
